Dimensions Festival

August 30 – September 3, 2017
Pula, Croatia

At Dimensions Festival it’s a bit like revisiting the play forts and dens you made as a kid, but instead of cushions and parts of your couch, it’s an actual abandoned fort. Boasting an awe inspiring location and big and bashy sound systems to match, electronica aficionados with a lust for beach stomping have been heading to Dimensions in Fort Punta Christo since 2012.

The height and peninsula setting of the old fort give you breathtaking views of the Punta Bay on one side, and Brijuni National Park Islands on the other. Take in the views of the Adriatic coastline and relax in amongst nature as well as raving next to ancient ruins or just on a boat party and hit the high seas. With seven different stage areas, the vibe at Dimensions is friendly and intimate, while the crowd is international and knowledgeable about electro.

In 2016, performances from global tastemakers were plentiful, with Dutch party-starter Motor City Drum Ensemble, Ostgut Ton’s first lady Tama Sumo and true-school advocate Jeremy Underground all on the bill. Also drawing parallels from the worlds of jazz, disco, techno, house and everything in-between were Antal, Moomin, Ryan Elliott, Hunee, Soichi Terada, Sassy J and Pender Street Steppers, who brought their trademark, flamboyant flavours to the fort. Innovative electronic hybrids came in the form of Tirzah, Suzanne Kraft, Jordan Rakei and Virginia featuring Steffi and Dexter, whilst vocalists Kadjha Bonet and Sarah Williams White presented some soul-searching, intimate live sets. A special part of the programming played on revival of the broken beat genre. Pioneers and newcomers of the genre played, including IG Culture, Namebrandsound, Alex Phountzi and EVM 128 all flying the flag for this London UK soul fusion.

Learn and Make

For the creative and the curious the chance to learn from industry figureheads at Dimensions’ Knowledge Arena is a real highlight. Run by artist collective CDR, the Knowledge Arena is an open air space for experimenting, learning and creating with audio production software. Midi-controllers, Machine Studios and laptops loaded with Maschine and Ableton allow the inquisitive festival-goer to experience a studio environment. Last year, workstations were filled within minutes of opening and curious festies left with tracks they’d built from scratch during the festival. From experienced producers to complete novices the chance is there to jump on and have a go, fostering inclusivity and creativity.

In short, Dimensions hosts world-class names in a seriously unforgettable setting, with a knowledgeable yet unpretentious crowd. Whether you strike the balance between raving all night and relaxing all day, or make the most of the daytime fun; vibing boat parties, CDR workshops and beach parties there is plenty to explore.
