The Düsseldorf Fun Fair has a long history. The festivities first took place 690 years ago when the local shooting club, St. Sebastianus, starting celebrating its patron saint’s day. The event kicks off with one of Germany’s biggest parades. Over 3,000 marchers make their way through the streets of Düsseldorf. There are uniformed marksmen on horseback and foot, marching bands and other traditional teams.
Today the fair is one of the biggest outdoor celebrations in Germany. Because of its popularity, there are around four million visitors expected to descend on Düsseldorf for the 115th edition of this fun fair. A highlight of the Düsseldorf fun fair is the historic parade, which is one of the largest in all of Germany. The event is one the whole family can enjoy, with its state-of-the art fairground rides. And it wouldn’t be a true German festival without the beer tents with costumed servers. There is also plenty of live music to enjoy.
The fireworks display on the first and last Friday of the Düsseldorf fun fair are a highlight of the event. The skies above Düsseldorf light up with the spectacular firework display. A great way to view the fireworks is from a boat trip along the Rhine. Another fun fair high point is the selection of the “Schützenkönig” (otherwise known as the “King of Marksmen”). The shooting club marksmen shoot at a dummy bird raised on a target. The one who shoots the bird down is awarded the title of King.
